Numerus Clausus and Labour Service (Testimony of Arnold Berkovits)

Autobiography of Arnold Berkovits (b. 1920). Arnold was born in Lunca de Jos (Gyimesközéplok), which was at the time of his birth part of Romania. Because of the so-called "numerus clausus", which restricted the admission of Jews to higher education, he was unable to start his studies in Kolozsvár (Cluj), which had been under Hungarian rule since 1940. Between 1941 and 1944 he performed labour service in the Hungarian army. After his liberation he joined the Romanian army and took part in the battles in Northern Hungary.
